The Many Benefits of Magnesium

The Many Benefits of Magnesium

Magnesium is involved in over 600 biochemical reactions in your body and is essential in all cells. It is involved in energy production, protein formation, muscle movement and many other reactions. Studies suggest that 50% of people in the UK get less than the recommended daily intake of magnesium.

Magnesium is essential during exercise as it helps to move sugar into you muscles for energy release in respiration, as well as disposing of lactate which can build up during exercise to cause fatigue. It is thought that taking magnesium supplements can improve performance during exercise as your body will need 10-20% more magnesium.

Magnesium can also reduce insulin resistance as it is essential in the process by which muscle and liver cells absorb sugar. Reducing insulin resistance can decrease the risk of illnesses such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

Low levels of magnesium are associated with chronic inflammation which drives the ageing process and can increase the risk of obesity and chronic illness. Taking magnesium supplements can decrease inflammation, reducing the risk of these conditions.

Magnesium is essential in maintaining healthy muscles. This is particularly important in the heart muscle and taking magnesium supplements can help to keep the cardiac muscle healthy, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

There are several other conditions which may be linked to low magnesium levels such as migraines, depression and PMS symptoms. Taking magnesium supplements to increase magnesium levels could potentially alleviate the symptoms of these conditions.

At Levitas Clinic Guildford, magnesium is included in our Immunity Booster infusion, as well as various supplements.
