What is Iron Deficiency?
Iron deficiency arises when there are low levels of haemoglobin in the red blood cells. This can also be referred to as Anaemia. Factors such as digestive problems or blood loss could be the causes of iron deficiency.
Levitas Clinic offers an intravenous treatment for patients experiencing low levels of haemoglobin, or where red blood cells are lower than normal. This intravenous treatment can be more effective, as iron is delivered in such a way that it bypasses the digestive process.
How does it work?
Amongst other important roles, the main purpose of iron is to transport oxygen around the body. Ferritin is a blood protein that includes tiny particles of iron in a sugar coating. Gradually, the iron is released from this sugar coating into the body.
What is the process?
You will meet with a clinician for a consultation before the treatment begins. This will involve reviewing your medical history and medication you may currently be taking. Any potential side effects of the treatment will be discussed with you during the consultation, and some blood tests may need to be taken. These will come at an extra cost. The infusion itself should last around 30 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
You may only need one single treatment, or you may need to return for subsequent treatments to complete your course. Once your course of treatment is completed, you may be required to return and have a further blood test to track your progress. Your iron levels will continue to be monitored at future appointments by your doctor to ensure that your levels stay within the right range for you. Depending on this progress, you may need further courses of treatment in the future.
